Launceston Street Pastors
Over the past few months, the group of Churches in Launceston together with the Town Council and Police have met to discuss the social action initiative, Street Pastors. (http://www.streetpastors.co.uk/).
Street Pastors is an inter-denominational Church response to urban problems, engaging with people on the streets to care, listen and dialogue usually from 10pm – 3am on Friday’s and Saturday’s.
It was pioneered in London in January 2003 by Rev Les Isaac, Director of the Ascension Trust, and has seen some remarkable results, including drops in crime in areas where teams have been working. There are now some 9000 trained volunteers in around 250 teams around the United Kingdom.
In the next few months, Launceston Street Pastors will be established on the streets of Launceston and Night Club area. There are substantial start up costs needed for equipment, training and uniforms and we are asking local businesses if they would kindly be able to support this initiative, through donations or sponsorship.
