Christianity - Answering the Questions
What is a Christian?
A Christian is someone who believes in and follows the teachings of Jesus Christ. They recognise Jesus as the Son of God and accept him as their Lord and Saviour. Christians strive to have a personal relationship with God and live their lives according to the teachings and example of Jesus. They believe in the power of the Holy Spirit to guide and empower them in their faith journey. Christians also identify themselves as part of the wider community of believers known as the Church.
What is Christianity?
Christianity, as a religion, is centred around the belief in God as the creator and sustainer of the universe. Christians believe that God is revealed in various ways: through the natural world, in the Scriptures (the Bible), and most significantly, in the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus is considered the ultimate revelation of God, showing humanity God’s nature, purposes, and love.
According to Christian belief, Jesus came into the world to demonstrate God’s love for all people and to reconcile humanity to God. His teachings, life, and sacrificial death on the cross are seen as pivotal moments in human history. Christians commemorate Jesus’ death on Good Friday and celebrate his resurrection from the dead on Easter Day, affirming the belief in the victory over sin and death.
Following Jesus’ resurrection, Christians believe that God’s Spirit was poured out on the early Christian community at Pentecost. The Holy Spirit plays a significant role in the lives of believers, empowering and transforming them, and working to renew the entire creation in love.
For over two thousand years, the Church has served as a witness to these beliefs, gathering for worship, discipleship, and spreading the Good News (the Gospel) of Jesus Christ. The Church takes different forms and expressions across various cultures and traditions, but its core purpose remains the same: to proclaim and live out the truths revealed in Jesus Christ.
